Thank you very much for the link to the jobs.

For anyone who is interested I can heartily recommend the company. It's a genuine world leader in its field and does some really, really interesting work in maritime autonomy, mission planning, sensor analysis including automatic target recognition, and navigation.

Japan sounds like the US, and Valerian sounds like Star Wars.

Should there be non-selective universities?

The actual report from Tim Blackman is very readable, and is here: http://www.hepi.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Hepi-The-Comprehensive-University_Occasional-Paper-17-11_07_17.pdf

(Disclosure: Tim was my boss's boss, and then acting boss's boss's boss, at the OU.)

> He’s a womanizing rogue with a strong sense of duty, she’s a good girl with an Ivy League education (which apparently still exists in the 28th century), and their unresolved sexual tension permeates every mission.

Oh wow, that's nothing like in the comic books.

Also, they both look way too young. In the books, they're maybe both about 30.

I lived in Japan for five years in the 90s and heard the same complaints then. Japan does it their way and this sticks in white people's craws something awful.

Indeed. It doesn't seem to me that the racism and xenophobia you experience in Japan is beyond what minorities experience elsewhere in the world. But since it's white people that experience the racism, it's suddenly the End Of The World.

I was guessing that the article on how hard it is to cut carbs would be on the difficulty of finding foods without carbs in them, which is tough enough. What it's actually about is even more depressing.

I don't suppose the Sun would have published nudes of Peter Capaldi, would they? No. So the article is right, and kudos to the author for using Warren Meers as a fictional demonstration of what the attitude is like. Mine, on seeing the announcement, was to remember the disappointment when they didn't choose a female Doctor last time, and to say, "About time."

I'd have thought that if the age of consent is 16, then if you're under 16, then by definition you can't consent. But apparently not.

I'm very confused by the article talking about non-selective universities not mentioning the Open University at all. It's pretty much the whole point of the institution!
