Not answered the relative prettiness question because I honestly don't care all that much (people say I have weird taste anyway ;-p) but people who are not at least as intelligent as me bore me senseless. I consider both my partners to be more intelligent than me, but I had a conversation with diffrentcolours last week where he made the point that because he and I have different strengths and do different things, we each think the other is more intelligent.

I think the age question would be more interesting if it were relative to your own age, as opposed to fixed ages. Like, would you go out with someone five years older than you? 10?

In my whole history of dating, I only ever dated one man older than I was, and that was a disaster, so I decided younger guys are the way to go :P

We discussed this on the_pure a while back. My personal theory is that the best thing that I can do, as a geek, is to find somebody else who has the geek mentality but in a different field, preferably one in which I'm interested.

The geek mentality is fairly universal so it would lead to understanding why I think that playing Neocron with wehmuth is a good night's entertainment, or why it's acceptable to be an hour late for a club because I was dicking with my exim configuration. However, if we had different fields of interest, then we wouldn't get into distro wars or other ego-domination battles common between geeks of the same field.

inulro pointed out that this is why her relationship with lastaii works so well - she's a mediaeval history geek and he's a computer geek.

See, that'd be perfect. You could educate each other and you'd both be generally 'interested'.

I've decided that it's silly for me to go out with someone who's not generally interested in the world.

This is actually something I'd come to the conclusion of myself. I used to try to date guys in the same field because I liked being able to talk and learn about stuff with them. But inevitably it became a competition, so now I keep the people in the same field as friends where I can more readily keep them in friendly competition rather than having it overloaded with other things.

i think that geek in the almost same field works. I do Windows programming/databases, Sean does UNIX (and not much databases, but thre is a Windowsy m,ove afoot for front end at his place). We can have detailed discussions, but it never gets 'religious'.

Of course we are now both converging on .Net, which might be entertaining...

I fudged a bit on the answers. I've gone out with people in their late forties and early fifties, if you count dates with women in the bdsm community, but honestly, those aren't what I consider to be "serious" dates. Also, if someone is more than ten years old than me, I doubt we would match up long-term.

I've also gone out with someone as young as age twenty-one, recently, but I still think it was a bad idea overall. I would prefer to date no one younger than me at all.

As far as "pretty" goes, that's so subjective and tied into personal preferences and personality, it's almost impossible to judge.

Me and Andrew do the same thing. Although it doesn't usually equal him thinking I'm _more_ intelligent, he just thinks I'm a darn sight better at a lot of other things than he is.

Perhaps it is due to the fact that all tests show that I'm freakishly intelligent, but in the long term, I'm only really interested in having close friends and lovers who are at least somewhat more intelligent than I am. I don't always start out seeking such people, but everyone that I have a long-term stable relationship with is such a person. I'm rather impressed by the number of defacto limitations there are on who I can become very close to.
