The homework study appears only to have looked at US children. There's a strong cultural element in the effectiveness of homework, though, isn't there? If there's an expectation that it should not occur, or that there are choices of other things to do, it becomes more of a burden and the parents don't support it. Surely requiring kids to work through problems, read, or answer questions outside the classroom context encourages more flexible usage of and access to what's learned in the classroom.
