I just discovered that in a 40x CD player, the outer rim of the disk is moving at 677km/hour or 55% of the speed of sound.

Digging a little deeper, I discover that a single speed CD-ROM can manage up to 500 RPM. Of course, that's CLV, whereas modern CD drives are CAV. Still, I wonder what speed 40x CD drives actually spin at.

Anyway round, that's really, really fast.

Supposedly when IBM was researching 7200 RPM drives (you can buy 15000 RPM now), they were using glass platters which had a tendency to shatter in all directions, like sharp-pointed glass bullets.

Who knew PCs could be so deadly?
