Why the Longest Day Isn't Hottest is an article explaining why there's a solstice and why it's not the hottest day of the year.

Speaking of which, I plan to watch dawn from on top of Arthur's Seat on Sunday morning if anyone else fancies joining me. It's at 4:26, so if you're going out on Saturday night it's a quick jog to the top after that. I'm not going out dancing, cos I want to be able to make it up there without my legs falling off...

Wow -- is this an England thing? What is Arthur's Seat? And why would anyone think the Longest Day of the year is also the hottest day? The hottest day of the year is obviously around the end of July.

See, I'm from Oklahoma, so I don't know these things. I HAVE gotten up in the morning and watched the sun come up on December 21rst, though.

Well, the longest day is the day that the sun is in the sky longest, and most overhead, so it seems somewhat logical that it should be the hottest, no?

I mean, everyone knows it isn't, but the explanation of why isn't completely simple.

And I'm in Scotland, Arthur's Seat is a hill next to me (800 feet tall) and I just fancy seeing in dawn on the Solstice.

And Dawn on the winter Solstice is about 9:30 here, I'm usually at work by then :->
