It doesn't use a laser though. Still, it'd be interesting to compare their results.

Date: 2012-09-29 09:03 am (UTC)That approach solves the supply problem caused by slow printing rates as well as saving on shipping costs. A win-win situation for all concerned. (Except for the buyer needing a printer.)
The only problem left to solve is how to stop the pirating of the 3D models...

Date: 2012-09-29 10:30 am (UTC)The main issue with 3D printers is that if you need 8 pieces in different colours, then put together, then it's probably more faff than just buying it. Local shops that put the bits together might be an option, but it's probably still cheaper for many items to have cheap labour mass produce things in China and then stick them on a slow boat over.

Date: 2012-09-29 11:03 am (UTC)Makerbot has the Thingieverse, but everything's free as far as I can see. But either way, whether free or sold models, there's a network effect going on there. The more printers sold means more model-makers and thus more models for the printer-buyers. But the model-makers should be offered a way to make something from their models.
Oh, and the laser approach has one advantage, in that you can make objects with free-floating internal bits. Balls within balls, working gears and so on.
