Have you noticed Makerbot's new 3D printer? ...

It doesn't use a laser though. Still, it'd be interesting to compare their results.

Printing's a bit slow for a cottage-industry production line. So while I think they'll be attractive to arty-types with a technical bent, the economics of a typical cottage industry would need to be turned on its head. Meaning the production should be done by the buyer at home using models bought on the net.

That approach solves the supply problem caused by slow printing rates as well as saving on shipping costs. A win-win situation for all concerned. (Except for the buyer needing a printer.)

The only problem left to solve is how to stop the pirating of the 3D models...

One approach that might work would be for a printer manufacturer to control a model store catering specifically for their printers. Then the printer owners could both buy and sell models in the store.

Makerbot has the Thingieverse, but everything's free as far as I can see. But either way, whether free or sold models, there's a network effect going on there. The more printers sold means more model-makers and thus more models for the printer-buyers. But the model-makers should be offered a way to make something from their models.

Oh, and the laser approach has one advantage, in that you can make objects with free-floating internal bits. Balls within balls, working gears and so on.
