Technically Linux did make it to the desktop

Unless mobile devices don't count as that. Android and related OS's are advancing, mostly because they dispensed with X11 and were made to be easy as the Mac and Windows.

No maker of desktop Linux distros like SUSE and Red Hat ever bothered trying that, and Ubuntu sucks because of the owner's arrogance. I suspect taking that kind of risk of dumping X11 outside of mobile might have required an investment and resources that would require a lot of corporate support no single distro company could attract if they weren't involved in mobile, but I'm not an IT person so I'm just speculating.

I guess it goes down to how you define desktop

But I'm just saying that as someone who believes tablets will eventually replace laptops, amongst other things eventually. Sure, they can use a lot more power drive space, but I can see where the trends are inevitably headed, at least if the human race doesn't go extinct thanks to global warming.
