I sort of agree.

It's a good thing I'm not a geek, since I have zero idea who those people are.

I've heard of Murder She Wrote and Orbital.

I mean, if one was an actor from a well-regarded American police procedural or a musician from a Belgian electro act, I might have more chance of recognising them I guess.

Well, Nathan Fillion (as Richard Castle) is a reasonably well-regarded American police drama. (Also, you may be familiar with a popular, short-lived little series called Firefly, and the follow-on movie Serenity.)

Matt Smith is the current Doctor Who. :)

You might think he'd be familiar with these things, but it saddens me dayly that he really really isn't.

That oughta be rectified. :)

You realise you're doing the equivalent of hipster kids who are all "I don't listen to them, they're too popular", right?

You'll be hanging out in Shoreditch next.

Whatever Nick's reply was that was going to be my comeback. ;)

Oh my god, he's a HIPSTER NERD.

If it makes me a hipster nerd to like popular mainstream TV shows and films, I think maybe you have your definitions wrong.

If I was saying "pfah, that Whedon character is too mainstream for me - I'll only watch horror things written by obscure Eastern Europeans in the original Polish, without subtitles" or "I liked him before he was popular" then it'd be a fair cop.

I think Belgian electro-acts count :P

Date: 2012-07-18 04:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] octopoid-horror.livejournal.com
So since I like Belgian electro, I should also be familiar with Joss Whedon and co? I don't think that follows...

Also, I don't think there are any industrial bands I've managed to like before they got popular, much to my shame.

Date: 2012-07-18 04:38 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cybik.livejournal.com
No, but then I'm not being ENTIRELY serious.

I don't think there are any bands ever that I've liked before they were really well known, but then I don't go out and find new music..

I've listened to a few things months before The Guardian was all over them, but that's really just a case of being slightly ahead of other 30something middle class people.

(also the show Nathan Fillon is in that's a police one appears to be about forensics according to the imdb - I went off those after overdosing on CSI. I prefer stuff about street policework ie something like The Wire, The Shield or Homicide)

I'm glad I haven't really done CSI just because I think it would be easy to overdose. I've heard good things about Castle.

From: [identity profile] octopoid-horror.livejournal.com
The problem with CSI, and it's a big one, is that almost every single episode at the point where I watched it was the same in structure. Since whichever channel it was on showed at least four episodes a week of CSI and CSI:Miami, this became very obvious very fast.

Also the ridiculous unreality of it in a semi-real world set show just got more and more ridiculous.

Also, Mark has a tshirt that says "I listen to bands that don't even exist yet".

He doesn't wear thick framed glasses or tight trousers.

He does have a ridiculous amount of Apple hardware, though.

He's so much of a hipster, he's smirking patronisingly at the ones who're still wearing thick framed glasses and tight trousers. That was so last year. This year it's no eyewear and Oxford bags (which I shall assume he wears, being in Oxford as he is)

I wouldn't have married a hipster. That would have been crazy.

It's kind of funny that people who like things that can be considered alternative will complain about their tastes being frowned upon or otherwise remarked upon by those in the mainstream of media, but are equally surprised by/sometimes outright intolerant of people who don't share their alternative tastes.

I don't mean this specific case, but it's pretty noticeable sometimes. There's this odd assumption that it your tastes in one form of media are "alternative" (or are ones you claim as being alternative even if it is actually mainstream), then they will be in other respects too. Warhammer 40k, Marvel comics and boardgames are three things that I don't see as being linked together, yet you'll see stores selling all three and people will assume that if you like one, you'll like the others too and sometimes be surprised that you don't. Musical tastes, for example, are pretty separate to taste in TV shows, but it's pretty obvious that some people assume alternative music fans all love sci-fi/horror/fantasy.

Hahaha! That's been my complaint about Matt Smith from pretty much the first time I saw him: "But that can't be the Doctor! He's got no eyebrows!!" Meanwhile everybody else was going on about the chin. That, I can handle. But the lack of eyebrows just weirds me completely.

This.

The mere idea of that many people in one space just makes me want to curl up in the fetal position. But the idea of seeing that many of my fandoms colliding tickles me, too.

Yes. Such a shame Charlie Sheen has never done any other film either before or since. Ahem.
