Trivia - in the UK, "trousers" is originally mainly a nautical term - they were an item really only worn my sailors - everybody else was in tight breeches (IIRC from at least the Saxons/Vikings onwards legwear was tight and also often bound in, mummy-bandage-style at the lower leg for good measure).

I don't really understand this direction in fashion, because tightly fitted breeches/hose are a REAL PAIN TO FIT. I can't think of any practical reason for such tight fitting that wouldn't also apply to sailors.

Wasn't it a class thing, where the upper and middle class had the time, energy, and servants to have culottes fitted each day, and the working class were sans-culottes and wore pantalons?
