I did always think it was weird that Rowling created one house that is essentially for losers. Even the Ravenclaws get more to do.

Truly baffling that anyone thinks that it might still work.

The parallels between the behaviour in that article and my tendency to torrent a film in between the cinema release and the DVD release are quite strong, too.

I feel disingenuous complaining about that when we got The Avengers a week earlier than the States. And yes, broadly speaking, I don't tend to torrent films; camera versions are annoying and if a DVD rip is available it's usually my policy to buy the DVD.

I have never been very into buying music, so I've always been confused by the concept of cover versions -- why do people have the rights to do that? Does the original producer get specific royalties, enough it's good for them even if their main band is being undercut? Or is it just so normal that no-one even considers that they could not let someone else scoop their new record.

I agree "not selling something" doesn't seem like a good idea. I can imagine it can sometimes be -- sometimes restricting supply can let you sell to a smaller market at a much higher price, I don't know exaclty how, but I know it sometimes does, but I've no idea if that often or ever works in music.

In the UK, the PRS (Performing Rights Society) handles making sure the writers of a song get paid when it is performed/played. This covers covers bands, pub jukeboxes [pub pays an annual fee, PRS divvie it up] etc etc... You register your song with the PRS (actually just the title and length!) and you can take it up with the PRS if people are playing it and you aren't getting paid. IIRC, in terms of royalties, in the UK you would get NONE for a cover version of a record, it would all go to the writers.

nearly, it's an acronym in ancient Greek for something like "Jesus Christ son of God" the initials of which spell Ichthys. Now I have to go look it up on wikipedia. Which is always correct.

"ΙΧΘΥΣ (Ichthys) is an acronym for "Ἰησοῦς Χριστός, Θεοῦ Υἱός, Σωτήρ", (Iēsous Christos, Theou Yios, Sōtēr), which translates into English as "Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior"."

What I found a shame was that the concepts of the houses could potentially have some decent characterisation in (in real life, "determined and loyal and non-exclusionary" often DOES beat "hot-headed" and "evil" and "clever"), and in the later books Rowling made an effort to give some characterisation of Hufflepuff other than "dork" and of Slytherin other than "evil", and if she had been able to make a transition from "the sort of characterisation appropriate to a school story for 11 year olds with the 'good' house and the 'bad' house" to a more adult characterisation that doesn't involve condoning writing off half of the population as worthless at age 11* it would have been awesome, but she didn't manage it.

* It's not unrealistic -- that's what the 11+ exam did in real life (except into "academic" and "non-academic" instead of "good" and "evil") -- but it comes across as "not written well enough" not "accurate portrayal that sometimes society isn't perfect"

Ah! Thanks, that was the bit I was missing. That actually makes a fair amount of sense, although with all of the fuss being made about copyrights recently, I didn't realise mechanical licenses had been common for a hundred years: "recording the whole song, but a bit different" seems more intrusive than fan-fiction (even if the originator is paid) :)

You might be able to justify the teeny tiny cycle lane on the roundabout if it meant "Car drivers, remember to give cyclists room on this bit." Maybe.
