Honestly I have a lot of friends who would rather pub tokens then the random gifts they get on birthdays and such.

Well, the thing is if someone gave them to me I'd put them aside for weeks when I wasn't bringing in much freelance income.

If someone gave me cash it would be spent easily. With these tokens lying around I could get myself a pint or two on weeks when I was broke.

I don't know WHY but it does seem to make sense to me: somehow giving me a bunch of cash is just a hassle to think of something to buy with it, but a voucher for something I actually want is fun to spend (although that's quite rare -- even things like john lewis vouchers just get filed under 'remember to use this when I next go to john lewis' not 'ooh, bonus stuff' :)).

Cash is more likely to end up in the general pot, or shoved into savings. Whereas a beer token is something you can't go out and spend on boring practical things like the rent.
