Virgin finally upgraded my upload speed, to a theoretical 20MBit/2MBit.

Except that the upload speed didn't go up. So I left a message on the forums asking whether my modem was up to spec for the new upload speeds, and three days later a box arrived. Luckily I was lying in bed feeling shaky so I could stagger to the door and get it.

The results are pretty good, especially considering my desktop is connected to the router via the electrical circuit, which I'm sure isn't as high quality as it could be:

Next up will be when Virgin upgrades everyone's download speeds, (somewhere between October and the middle of next year), at which point I should have a 60MBit connection.

As I was discussing with [personal profile] dalglir earlier, things have really moved on with technology. Not only are disks staggeringly bigger, but I remember when I had a modem running at 14.4k, being charged by the minute. I remember setting up a 10Base2 network in one of the earliest offices I worked in, and dealing with the whole network going down if one connector came loose. And now my internet connection is an order of magnitude faster than that. I'm sure I'll still get bored of waiting for things though - just give me five minutes to get over my future shock.

Running tests I get 4.18Mbps down, 0.68 up... but actuals (e.g. uTorrent, the only thing that actually tells me what speed) are WAY below that. About 0.5Mbps. What have I missed?

cheapnames.co.uk are part of them - I only knew them from that side as I mistakenly used them to register some domains back in the day.

Does having multiple things going on on your computer change the result.

Both Rome Girl and I are currently connected to the Internet and both of us have multiple windows up and three IM programs running at the same time.

The result I get from the site you used is a download speed of 12.27, an upload speed of .87 and a ping of 47.

Yet, I feel like our connection is super fast. It takes about five minutes to download a television show so I'm wondering if having lots of stuff going on while I'm running that test effects the test.

(Or if my connection is super slow and I'm just not noticing that.)

Did they phone you or write to you? I keep getting what I reckon are dodgy calls from people claiming to be from Virgin Media asking my permission to upgrade me for free. They've already written to me informing me about this free upgrade so why would they need to phone me? They always hang up on me when I start asking questions so I'm sticking with my "dodgy as fuck" theory.

So those phone calls I got probably were a scam. That's good to know.

The memories! I too remember the pain of a lose 10baseT connector. And being able to tell if our modem was running at 14k instead of 28k via the noises it made during the negotiation phase.

It still takes me back when I hear the modem dialup on (old) films, and I can still tell what speed they're running at by the noises.

[Edit: I'm pleased I never had to mess about with acoustic couplers though.]

My cable modem is now 12 years old.
Hopefully I will get a new one sent to me too.
Did you have to request one?
