[livejournal.com profile] octopoid_horror emailed me that, and I laughed enough that my cold-inflamed throat turned into burbling sounds. Which got me a concerned question from Julie in the next room.

If you don't get it, then you haven't read Watchmen. Which is ok, as nowadays Alan Moore doesn't want you to.

(Me, I'm looking forward to seeing what the reviews are like for the prequels, and the wailing and gnashing of teeth as various bits of comics fandom tear themselves apart.)

Coincidentally we watched Watchmen again two nights ago. (I've just bought the final, ultra-super-ultimate extended cut import DVD - the one where the film lasts three hours and they don't leave out The Black Freighter.) Of course the film is "based on the graphic novel drawn and co-created by Dave Gibbons"...

I think I've decided that in its extended form, it makes my top ten favourite films of all time. And I'm really not a 'costumed hero' fan. And the graphic novel is second only to Sandman for me.

I got the Director's Cut because I wasn't sure if, in a filmed version, the Black Freighter stuff would work stuck into the film.

The director's cut itself is awesome.

I don't think that it's that he doesn't want you to read Watchmen.

I think it's that he wants you to be able to read something better.
