I think the cat was using the mind meld to tell the kid to go to sleep. Later, he'll return to eat its soft parts...

The whole pull head back and put paw on something is *usually* a prelude to the cat going whappity-whap-whap with the very same paw (at a toy, at another cat). It's "I'm keeping this paw right here, see this paw, THIS is the paw of DOOOOOOM" because it's usually the "shut up or I will kill you and eat you" warning.

but, aye, it looks cute. That's how they get away with it.

Sure, it looks cute, but I think the cat was testing to see if the baby would make a tasty snack. My cat would've either hissed at the crying and run away or swatted the kid on the head; antisocial kitty does not like small children.
