Yes, that's exactly what I'm suggesting, but since I'm talking about staying on CET permanently (as I said in the last comment), rather than continually changing it all about, the confusion wouldn't be an issue. Implementing it this way would also mean you could just do it in England and Wales, and then allow the Scots to keep their businesses on 9am-5pm, meaning that the whole country would be happy, rather than the current two solutions, one of which will definitely piss one of the two countries off.

If Scotland goes independent and remained in GMT whilst England was on CET, does that mean businesses might consider moving to England in order to take advantage of the closer tie to Europe?

This is more a solution to the problem if the UK remains united – we can give the English and the Scottish what they want without having to have two different time zones, if you see what I mean.

I'm not sure how you don't get why it gives them both what they want…

(Not trying to patronise, but curious as to which part you don't get?)

Why do you expect English/Scottish people to want to be on the same working hours as people in Scotland/England when they clearly don't want to be, given the fact that, right now, England wants to be on CET and Scotland wants to be on GMT?

A news report today said the Government was bowing to pressure to consider changing to CET across the country, but there was fierce resistance to the idea in Scotland, so I'm assuming from that the impetus to consider changing is coming from England/Wales/N. Ireland and the impetus to stay the same is coming from Scotland.

If that's not true, then it means that the Scots and the English both get what they want because they're not disagreeing on the matter! :D

But I like that London is the origin on the t-axis, I don't want that to change.

This is why I would very much like to stay on GMT and just move the opening times XD
