Strange. I would expect most sites to appreciate links.

Still, preventing people from posting links to the site seems like it would encourage rather than discourage the plagiarism that the page mentions.

Any website that puts up terms and conditions on how it should be linked to can go fuck itself ('no hot-linking' aside). It's a central tenant of the internet that if a site's on the open internet, a link can be made to it elsewhere. You can't mess with that shit!

If you don't want hotlinking then you block it at your end by checking the referrer headers.

Indeed. ISTR there was one site - possibly 4chan or something like that - that redirected hotlinks to something disgusting, like Goatse.cx or Tubgirl. Which is one way of dealing with it. :)

There are lots of sites that do that.

Hell, *IMDB* does something like it, requiring all offsite links (even links directly to a real IMDB page) jump through a hoop to ensure that an actual IMDB page loads.
