I've never seen Alex Salmond giving an interview before, and I've never seen someone shoot down an interviewer so well before. Damn, that was impressive.

I have seen him give interviews and this was the first time I've seen him give one where he didn't sound like he was either whinging about something or moaning about how unfair everything was.

He certainly handed the interviewer back their teeth.

That's funny, I always see pictures of him and think "what a whinger" and then whenever I've seen him he's been eloquent and reasoned - if at times painfully smug and superior. Don't get me wrong, I don't like the guy per se, but this, to me, was 'classic Salmond' rather than an exceptional case.

I too am impressed. I wish there were more interviewees like him.

While there are plenty of reasons why Labour lost in Scotland and the SNP now have a majority, I'm pretty confident that high up the list would be "The SNP have Alex Salmond and Labour do not". No matter what you think about his policies, he's a formidable performer.

he has, historically, had a couple of pretty good advantages: he argues very directly [none of the typical political weaseling] and comes across as.... right. In that he appears to know exactly what he's talking about. Even when he isn't, and doesn't.

also, name the last three Scottish Labour leaders /without/ checking first. Including the current one

Henry McLeish. Um....

And yes, another reason why Labour got gubbed is they kept too many of their star performers in Westminster, simultaneously raising the West Lothian question even more (why are half of the Cabinet, seemingly, Scottish?) and diminishing their forces in the devolved Parliament.

Wow. I'm actually quite impressed. I hadn't heard him give an interview either. Is he always this calm, collected, and factual?
