How confident are you that what's being measured is a good marker of intelligence (whatever that may mean) and not some social measure like education or affluence?

Of course intelligence is correlated with education and affluence. Anything else would seem very odd to me.

What I mean is, I'd expect age of operating system to correlate really really strongly with affluence (see also choice of Mac vs Windows). I'd not be 100% surprised if that explained a very large proportion of the observed effect.

Yes, almost certainly.

Also, geeks skew massively away from IE, and tend to be of above average intelligence, so that's going to affect things as well.
