Not intended as an excuse, but were there many strong female characters in any of Herge's work? The only one that I can think of was from the Jo, Zette et Jocko.
Just thinking that if brought up on it, they can claim to be sticking to the source material.
Thing is, there's always scope to re-invent. Ach, maybe I'm just being a bit prescriptive but I don't want to see people put off of seeing something I want to be great.
Bianca Castafiore is probably the only one. There are so few female characters full stop -- I can think of her assistant Irma, the wives of Lampion and Alcazar, and that's about it.
I like the way it looks but I suspect I will be on occasions outraged at what they do to the plot. In fact, I'm already miffed to see Haddock and Tintin being introduced. They are good friends already by this point.
We won't know until nearer the time. I assume they wanted to mix the "origin" bits of Crab in with the treasure hunt, so they might start off with the drug smuggling, and lead into the treasure hunt once they've got introductions over with.
I think that expecting adaptations to be entirely faithful is always going to be disappointing. That's why I held off on reading the first books of Game Of Thrones until after I'd seen the first season.
I'm not a huge Tintin fan - I love the artwork, but the stories and humour leave me cold. I was worried about the uncanny valley problem but now I've seen this trailer I'm less worried, it looks like something I can imagine watching happily for 90-120 minutes.
And Steven Moffat, Joe Cornish and Edgar Wright has to be the best comedy/drama screen writing line up of all time, so unless Spielberg has edited every single joke out of the script it should be guaranteed fun.

Date: 2011-07-12 12:08 pm (UTC)How are they combining the drug smuggling of Crab with the treasure hunt of Licorne/Rackham? I sense more outrage... :/
