I thought Great Ormond Street's copyright to Peter Pan ran out which was why they commissioned a sequel by Geraldine McCaughrean.

Never heard about that, but Wikipedia suggests Americans believe they can do what they want with it. I confess I don't actually know what that paragraph means.

Well, you can now buy Lost Girls in this country, so they aren't defending any remaining copyright very vigorously.

Not so far as I know. I believe they held off publishing until 2007, but that was it.
