I got an email from [livejournal.com profile] johnbobshaun earlier:

The new Flaming Lips EP is being distributed on a usb stick inside an edible gummi brain inside a life size edible gummi skull.

Their last single was distibuted as twelve youtube videos that you needed to play simultaneously.
and it makes me wonder. I know that you get publicity for releasing things in odd ways. And I'm sure it amused the artists no end to be able to produce these crazy things. But what percentage of the population gets a kick out of this? And how much does it correspond with the people that like the music?

Despite being a digital guy, I love the idea of the gummi skull way more than the twelve Youtube videos. That just sounds like work.

Aye, twelve youtube videos that I had to play simulutaneosly just makes me ask "Do you really actually want me to listen to your song?"

I think the USb stick inside a sweet may be a case of a drunken conversation going too far.

One hundred per cent of the voting population in my household will be listening to the album on Napster, assuming Napster is working and supply it.

Wayne Coyne has had a big thing for simultaneous sound for a long time. They made an album back in 97 called Zaireeka which was4 cds with one track each that had to be played simultaneously. They've also done expermients with getting people to play different tapes at the same time (usually in old style boomboxs).

Plenty of bands have fans who feel they have to to have everything they release and it creates hype. You're posting about it, after all!

Also, making a gimmick out of packaging is something that I imagine works well in this excitingly fast-paced digital age.

Aye. The Lips have form in this .. way of doing things. Is the edible gummi stuff vegetarian? I'll have to get it if it is.
