This sparked a conversation with Bernard about how on earth Fahrenheit was devised which in turn led to us wiki'ing it. A little gem from the article that I just had to share:

That's pretty awesome. I wish he'd gone from zero as the freezing point of water though, as then it would be from zero (too damn cold for people) to 100 (too damn hot for people).
