I've seen CCTV figures referenced on the BBC a few months ago which basically said "CCTV is useless, it's a deterrent with no real effectiveness" The effectiveness, or supposed effectiveness, may of course vary dependent on location.

Absolutely - I've seen figures saying that the drops in areas with cameras are not significantly different in size or type from areas which lack cameras.

In big cities, is public (as opposed to privately-run CCTV actually monitored as standard, or is it reviewed the fact? I don't actually know.

So with 6,812 cameras (in 2009), they managed to identify 1,970 suspects on said cameras. In the year november 09-november 10 there were over 828,000 (actual, not suspected) crimes in Greater London.
