It's an emergency. Well, kinda
Dec. 16th, 2010 09:08 pmSo, it looks like Yahoo is shutting down Delicious. Which is where all my links are fed through.
Anyone know of alternatives that can be used to make daily posts?

Date: 2010-12-17 12:47 pm (UTC)a) That's Python, right? I'm now checking whether the machine I'm hosted on supports Python.
b) Do you have an hourly cron job that kicks this off?

Date: 2010-12-17 02:07 pm (UTC)If you wanted to use it, you'd need to hack it about a bit. As it says, it gets its username and password from an XML file I happen to use for ljdump (the backup tool) and you probably don't want the LJ Toys stuff in there (actually, neither do I now they're shutting up shop). Plus if you do tags the way Delicious says you should (running words together abitlikethis) you'd probably want to muck with the tags stuff if you wanted LJ posts tagged with Delicious tags: the way it works at the moment is that it tags the link blog postings with LJ tags which already exist, but doesn't create new ones specifically for Delicious stuff, and it knows I use dashes for spaces in Delicious tags.
(b) Yes (well, daily):

Date: 2010-12-17 01:37 am (UTC)At least when 6A bought LJ and Rojo it was partially to get the staff, Brad got moved onto other projects almost immediately, and they put the Rojo guy in charge of the company.
I don't get why you'd buy something to then neglect it then kill it.

Which looks like it would do most of what I want. And is open source. And is Python, so I'd have to learn to hack about with that.
Hoping that Google offers to buy Delicious :->

To be honest, I'd pay for Delicious, if they were going to charge for it. I wish they'd give that a try...

Date: 2010-12-17 01:07 am (UTC)"If you choose the option to include your tags, they will be in your export even if you don't see them on the page -- you can view the source of the file to make sure your tags are there. Also note that if you have created tag bundles, they will not be preserved in your exported file. This is a limitation of the export file format."
So it'll be just a question of choosing a replacing service, then.

Date: 2010-12-17 01:46 am (UTC)One of the longer term ideas for DW is to completely revamp Memories to make it into a social bookmarking service.
Delicious was mentioned as one of the inspirations. Wonder if anyone's actively working on that, and whether off site links would be included? Because if so, getting a daily export post would be a good thing to offer as a basic service for that anyway.
In the meantime, if Delicious dies soon (and they're unlikely to just pull the plug, they'll announce a close date), then I'll do plan b, set up a Twitter account just for links and use Bit.LY and then a daily digest importer, nowhere near as good, but at least I can still post, given I've got back into it fairly quickly.

Date: 2010-12-17 04:29 pm (UTC)Essentially, as it is at the moment, if they were in danger of going under, they could raise money through the userbase fairly easy, and have done so once already. As the business model is to keep it small and promote interop encouraging others to set up similar, they should do OK.
