Seriously though, this will eventually make another big change in the economy, the same way office computing made a bunch of jobs redundant. Yay, saving people from dull drudge jobs. Argh, our economy is not at all elastic enough to cope with the concept of everyone needing to do less work :/

Hehe, the FT article Andy's just delicioused this morning makes pretty much the same point as I do, but better :)

Yeah - the problem is rapid change. Small changes over time are easily adjusted to - new jobs appear, people are trained for them, etc. Sudden massive changes aren't something that societies cope with well.

And it goes deeper than that, in that everything is geared to the purpose of work being people having jobs, rather than the purpose being to collectively Get Stuff Done.

Well, employers employ people to get stuff done. If there wasn't stuff for people to do they wouldn't pay them cash to do it (gross inefficiencies to one side). The government obviously wants people to have jobs, so that they don't have to pay them benefits.

But it would be possible to completely reconfigure society so that we only did Stuff That Was Necessary, but all attempts to do this so far have ended very badly indeed.
