So, if I was to be getting my hands on a 360 at some point in the next two and a half weeks, what games are must haves?

Bonus points for multiplayer coop that I can play with Julie on the same TV. Oh, and bear in mind that I already have GH for the Wii, and also the Lego Star Wars/Indie games.

Edit: I enjoy a mix of genres, but tend to play FPS games with a mouse and keyboard. The games we've enjoyed playing the most recently were Mario Galaxy(1 and 2) and Super Mario Bros, so any platformers (2 or 3D) are appreciated. We also enjoyed Lego Star Wars and Indiana Jones a lot.

Do I get bonus points for mentioning Fable?

MP coop titles that are good to have:

Burnout (although not Paradise as it doesn't have split screen).
You're In the Movies/ Scene It! - Especially as I got both off Amazon for a total of £25.
Mass Effect 2 is a must have, even though it's not coop.
Assasins' Creed is marvellous fun, but again single player only.
Splinter Cell Conviction was good fun in coop, and I'd hate to not suggest it even if it's a bit complex.
Lego: Batman/ Indiana Jones/ Star Wars. Really, no reason needed.

I'll have a proper look at my collection once I'm home, and post it up. You're welcome to borrow any I'm not currently playing.

I've got a massive repository of coop games as that's what Barry and I play at weekends.

Oh I don't know how I forgot it, but Borderlands is a must. It's a first person Madmax meets Diablo game. You can play with the same character in single player in coop and level them up. It's hilarious and great fun - make sure you get the Game of the Year edition with all the DLC.

Lego Harry potter and ilomilo are constantly on the go in our house - both co-op.

The only game that made me want an xbox was the latest Halo. I have no idea if it has co-op play.

What genres do you enjoy? That's a big influence on my suggestions.

I'll agree that Mass Effect (1&2 for best effect, but 2 is a must-have in any case) is a strong candidate even without multiplayer co-op. Another RPG to try, again solo only alas, is Fallout 3. (I'd hold off on New Vegas until the patch is released.)

If you like FPSes, Halo: Reach has 2-player splitscreen coop for both the storyline and multiplayer modes. I'm terribly biased on this one, as I'm a raving fan of the series... but the entire series does include local coop play. (I'd also recommend ODST and Halo 3 for the 360 if you do enjoy Reach.)

Another shooter series with strong coop is Gears of War, though it is a bit over-the-top with violence and bro-mance and its multiplayer doesn't really rev my motor.

Crackdown (the first, not the sequel) is another recommendation I'm willing to make with good co-op. (I can't remember if it's split-screen, though.)

Mirror's Edge as a first-person jumping-puzzler recommended simply for the esthetics and novel gameplay, though it doesn't have a co-op mode. (It does have a sort of hot-seat competitive mode, though, that allows you to see how the other player ran the race-course by dropping in a "phantom" model you can chase.)

Guitar Hero (which you already have) and Rock Band are good candidates. I haven't tried Lips (a karioke game) but those who like it do enjoy it a lot.

the Orange Box (Half-Life 2 + episodic content, Team Fortress 2, Portal) is another strong recommendation without co-op.

There are also a ton of really good coop games in the Xbox Live Arcade for digital-download.

-- Steve could probably dig up a few more suggestions if nudged in the direction of preferred genres.

Roomie and I have recently played Lara Croft: Guardian of the Light on cooperative play and it was excellent. It's a great mixture of puzzles and shooting things, and each character has their unique abilities that the game relies on. It requires teamwork and discussion and a lot of shouting at each other: "jump on my head!" "Jump! I'll catch you!" "throw a spear for me!" "No! Don't let me fall to my death!".

Highly recommended.

If you like JRPGs, then Eternal Sonata is quite nice. The PS3 version is coop -- which is how I play it with my wife -- so the 360 version might be coop as well.

Also if you are into getting XBLive stuff, look up:

Limbo
Geometry Wars

The XBox version has different unlockable characters, if you care. Also seconding Braid, if you don't already have it. The Scott Pilgrim game is a fun, retro co-op beat'emup.

I've already chucked you a couple of ideas over email but here's some more.

Arkham Asylum: just a brilliant, well thought out game with a trainspottery level of detail to the geeky Batman stuff.

Dead Rising: Zombies, a shopping mall, stupidly hard. Good fun though.

Crackdown: GTA sorta thing only more free-form and with superpowers.

Dead Space: Resident Evil 4 in space with brilliant atmosphere and scary as all hell.

Psychonauts: This is an original xbox title that you can buy on XBLA. 3D Mario style platform game and probably the best written game I've ever played. Has a touch of the Invader Zim's about it.

Enslaved: I haven't played this but have heard nothing but good things. Platform/Fight-y thing that's an adaptation of the Monkey legends with a script by Alex Garland.

Prototype is amazing for casual play if you can find it cheap and then get about halfway through the game to the point where you've unlocked all the core powers. Single player only, but it's a free-roaming monster-em-up across Manhattan.

You kill people. You run up straight up buildings, leap across rooftops, throw cars and trucks around, morph your limbs into clubs, swords, claws and whips. You can pull helicopters out of the sky, or jump up to them and hijack them. But mostly you kill people. Oh, and you can disguise yourself as someone you've killed, accuse an enemy of being you in disguise, then call in an airstrike on the people who're now attacking the hapless patsy.

I guess if you don't like killing people it might not be the game for you.

It's not a good game. But it's a great game.

Also on XBLA:

Trials HD
Pacman CE DX
Space giraffe
Limbo (arty platformer)
Greed Corps (turn based strategy game that I really suck at)

There's a pile of interesting indie games too that cost buttons, like "I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB135 1NN1T" which is a fun 4 player coop robotron style thing. Edge had a good article about them last month which was very useful because it's pretty tricky to find good indie titles unless you know what you're looking for.

Halo (start with I and go in order) is absolutely awesome multi-play. My husband and I have played all of the (first 3) games in the series multiple times, and we've just bought the last two games, and are eagerly looking forward to playing them.

I'm not a big FPS fan, but Halo is one of my absolute favorite games ever.

Gears of War (both I and II) is also a lot of fun to play together.

Dead Space and Bioshock are both one-player games, but they're cinematic enough that my husband and I enjoyed playing them together (we handed off the controller).

I also really enjoyed handing off controllers with my husband for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Saints Row I and II.

The Darkness is an older, really underrated game that you can probably pick up for a couple of bucks. The storyline is excellent.

And if you like Star Wars games, Knights of the Old Republic was a fun one, even for a non-SW-fan like me.

I wasn't a big fan of Mass Effect (I've only played the first one). It was pretty, but the gameplay was kind of disappointing. And I hated, hated, hated Assassin's Creed. Beautiful to look at, but sooooo intensely boring to play. Ugh.
