I'm getting to the point where I'm thinking "how will the vastly technologically inferior humans stop the aliens this time?". It's okay in films like Independence Day because they're not meant to be taken seriously. Skyline looks like the aliens are so advanced that any resistance by the humans is pointless.

At least these guys look vaguely mortal.

If I was a malignant alien force it would be mass carpet bombing of all the cities before you even saw my first space ship. That's just how I roll.

Yep. Throw rocks from the high ground, it's basically unstoppable.

Bombs? Why use bombs. Just poison us. Would make for a dull movie though.

Crysis 2 trailer looks very similar?

Wow, first Skyline (which looks to be utterly dreadful), and now this. Perhaps this will be better. At least, Monsters looks fairly promising.

The thing is, I know I'll go and see skyline and that, even though they look fairly mind-numbing.

I thought that Monsters looked terrible (unless your idea of fun is going "but look what they did with so little money. Man if they'd had a budget this would rule." District 9 would satisfy the urges to see a film with some similiar ideas, and is good.

Skyline didn't excite me, but the review on SA makes it sound interesting.

Army men fighting aliens looks possibly entertaining though. I'd like a decent army-vs-aliens film that isn't weighed down by ponderous WE ARE MAKING A DISASTER/WAR MOVIE BUT THE WHOLE FILM MUST STOP FOR TENDER EMOTIONAL MOMENT WITH A BLUE/ORANGE FILTER *director pushes child towards camera*

I mean, seriously - it's going to be a film about army guys shooting aliens. If you're going to see a film about army guys shooting aliens, you don't need to know their motivation, their backstory. I don't know if Hudson had a girlfriend back on earth, or if Hicks had a Dad who was really controlling and wanted him to be a doctor. I don't even care if Vasquez acts so manly because she secretly wants to be a pretty ballerina and has to act so macho to hide this.

If you're the key audience for a film about shooting aliens, the only use for those parts of the film is going to get more popcorn. Look at Predator, Predator 2 or Commando. After the opening of each film (not counting Predator, which starts off high octane) there isn't a slack moment. Not every film needs to have action and romance/comedy/emotional resonance. If I go see a heartwarming romantic film, I don't expect it to suddenly have car chases or gunfights.

I'd argue that talent isn't strictly necessary, if you have awesome people. For an action movie, anyway.
