A question: is it considered normal to breast feed your baby in public? I'm not looking to stir up any drama but am genuinely curious as to what the going standard is. I've never seen it done, so my guess would be not, but looking for other input.

I'd say it is. Sometimes you're out somewhere and the baby needs feeding... It's nice to have a quiet spot to do it in, but equally, if you're sitting in a café, why not do it there?

I would consider it normal. And certainly preferable to the alternative (a screaming baby).

You might just have not noticed it done - if people are practised at it, and wearing suitable clothing, they can do it pretty discreetly.

(I'm a new mum, and haven't yet breastfed my baby in public, but intend to do so. I've fed her in semi-public places like parties and church.)

I was very nervous about breastfeeding my first baby in public, but I rapidly realised that nobody could tell. Hope it works out just as well for you.

Depends on where you are. It's generally considered normal except by the easily offended. In some US states it's legal whereas in others it's considered indecent exposure. (bah)

I can't imagine ever actually stopping in the middle of Primark, but seemingly, it's legally permitted.

> Breckland Council said the move aimed to make it fairer for individuals who did not smoke.

I can see their point.

But then I take Facebook breaks to account for the fact I don't smoke :)

At one workplace, I started taking espresso breaks when the rest of the admin team beetled out to the fire escape for a tab and a technical argument discussion.

Since they were all heavy smokers, that turned out to be a mistake.

One could always take wank breaks.

Re. the smoking breaks, there was a minor revolt in our office recently, wherein there had been complaints about the smokers in the team wandering outside for smoking breaks outside their alloted break times. Apparently, all the smokers were rounded up and told that if they were going to smoke, they had to do it in their 15/20 minute morning and afternoon breaks, rather than taking them in addition to it. Several smokers were very irate about it.

It did, because it was considered unfair that they were having an additional break because of something they have as a habit.

Then, it turned into a dictatorship and new rules have been popping up all over the place about how long breaks must be, where you can go when you take them etc. It's all gone a little bit insane.

Funny thing is that we're meant to be on flexi-time too. Admittedly, if you nominate to be on an early start, you're expected to be in by 8.30, but lately, we've been having daily e-mails berating the people who got in 5 minutes late because of traffic.

Personally, I'm not fussed, because I'm always in far too early and leave late, but I know a lot of people aren't entirely thrilled about it all. We'll see what happens the next time we have a team meeting. I suspect opinions will be voiced and made abundently clear.
