It does, sad to say, seem that a depressing number of AGW-deniers, holocaust-doubters and 9/11 wackjobs are engineers, too.

Yup, your explanation sounds about right to me. Engineering seems to attract people who believe that there is a Right way and a Wrong way to do things, and that this applies not just to building bridges, but to the rest of the world as well. Modernism writ large, if you will.
