It's almost as if people are trying to wipe that name clean and overwrite new creations, over and over again. Like a ... er ... you know, those medieval parchments that kept getting reused. Can't think of the name.

Confusingly both Palimpsest the novella (Charles Stross) & Palimpsest the novel (Catherynne M. Valente) are on this year's Hugo ballot.

I saw the Reg article last night and it actually managed to make more sense of any budget than any analysis I've read in the standard press in years. Whether the article's right is a different matter, but it's a good read either way.

Even more impressive are the comments. Show me another news site where you'll get that level of intelligent, reasoned, civil commentary, rather than random abuse, thinly-veiled racism, idiocy and a complete lack of a grasp of basic English.

All in all, one of the best pieces I've read in ages, on any topic!

Well, there is that one comment where someone asks why the Govt doesn't just print enough extra money to pay off the deficit. Cue about twenty simultaneous references to 'Weimar Republic' and 'Zimbabwe'...

Okay, maybe the replies did get a little overkill, but at least none were of the "cuz wed be like them <insert racial slur of you choice here> zimbabians" that you'd get from the Daily Mail or the BBC's Have Your Say :)

(Actually even that was too intelligent for the Daily Mail or HYS, sorry :)
