Three questions about the Apple Vision
Jun. 7th, 2023 09:37 amI have three questions about the new Apple Vision virtual reality/augmented reality headset:
1) Have they *really* got the overlay completely nailed to the background? If I move me head quickly, is it definitely not going to drag things around the place and feel off?
This is the one I'm most confident they have gotten right - by doing it as a VR headset with cameras on the front they've made this much more plausible than the existing devices which try to overlay pixels on transparent-ish glass like the HoloLens/Magic Leap.
2) Can I wear it for an hour without my face getting sweaty?
I feel moderately confident about this one. Every headset up to this point that I've used has felt sweaty after about 10 minutes, but I've heard that the Apple Vision is well ventilated and comfortable. I'm looking forward to some more detail here though.
3) Will the next version have more than a two hour battery life?
This is pretty key, and it's disappointing that it's so low at the moment. The marketing always(?) shows it being used without tethering it to cables, and if in reality that's not the case, and it won't let you get through a few hours on a plane/train then that's a bunch of the reasons people might want one off the table for the first version (which should generally be avoided anyway).
If the answers are all yes then I'm completely sold on version 2. Not that I'm likely to be able to afford one for the forseeable future unless they can also bring the price down by about 80%!
Meanwhile, here are some thoughts from someone who's worked on similar products.
