::snicker:: They definitely aren't using the same oil they were using in 1912. I'm guessing they stumbled across the amazing secret that absolutely tons of greasy dive diners use across the world! They probably dope the new oil with a bunch of the old oil, which does something weird to maintain the oil's aged characteristic. I gather it's similar to keeping a batch of sourdough alive. Sure, there's a bakery that has a batch of sourdough that's been alive since the time of Napoleon, but it's really more accurate to say that it's the great great super great grandkid of the original culture.
Several commentators on the election coverage have said that the UK would never cope with a proportional system; so ingrained into their DNA is the adversarial FPP system that they'd never be able to work with their opponents. Bollocks to that I say.
The same argument was trotted out when NZ went proportional. And yes, the change didn't happen overnight. In fact, the post the 1996 elections, it was weeks of negotiations before a new government was formed. Initial fears of "No one is in power!" dropped off when the sky didn't fall down. Many wags at the time observed that the country was doing better without the politicians. But, it didn't take long for everyone to work out a modus vivendi.
