I think he means economically. Both are considered developed nations, as is pretty much all of western Europe.

It seems incredibly unlikely that I have any Gael ancestors whatsoever.

But I have been living in Scotland for (slightly) more than half my life, so I could consider myself an adoptive Gael :->
