A complete lack of surprise
Apr. 22nd, 2011 10:06 amI'm not sure if it says more about me (and my lack of paying attention),
the country (and the fact that we don't really do religion) or the company
I work for (which doesn't do set Bank Holidays, but instead adds days onto
our holiday allowance), but I completely failed to notice that today was a
bank holiday until I got off the bus on Lothian Road and thought that the
traffic was startlingly absent.
It was almost spookily quiet - probably the quietest I've seen it since the
G8 riots in 2005 (when I left the office to discover a completely empty
Lothian Road, except for a row of riot police on horses. It felt strangely
apocalyptic.).
(I'm sure that one of those full stops is unneccesary - but I'm also sure
that I'm mangling the English language enough that I'd have to rephrase
most of that line to remove it.)
