Unnatural Hours
Nov. 24th, 2008 08:11 amTalking to Kirsty yesterday I mentioned that one of the reasons I'm tired a lot is that naturally speaking I'd go to bed about 2am and wake up at 10am. Sadly, my work doesn't allow this, but they do allow me to start work at 10am, which is nice.
Normally I wake up at 8:40/9:00, catch a bus at 9:40 and arrive at work at 9:57, clocking in with moments to spare. At which point, I'm sure, some of you are gasping "Clocking in? How barbaric!" - but it's a system I heartily approve of. I wave a card at a machine as I wander into the office or leave it (so also at lunch) and we have a computer system that tells us how many hours we've worked in any given time period - I can then take a look and say "Oooh, I worked 20 minutes late on Monday, I can leave early today!" - and it's entirely fine.
We have an nicely flexible flexi-time system (core hours are 10:00-11:45 and 2:30-3:30), so people come and go as they please. Some of my co-workers work 7:30 - 3:30 with an hour for lunch, I work 10:00 - 5:30 with a half-hour lunch, and so long as you make it to any scheduled meetings, and your flexitime stays out of debt (well, less than two hours of debt) it's all good.
None of which explains why I'm posting at 8am, a time when I'm normally snoring. Sister-in-law Meredith is raising money for charity with some cakes, so I got permission from my boss to sell some, and I'm going past her flat at 8:40 this morning, because _she_ doesn't have such generous flexi-time arrangements. Julie, meanwhile, is (hopefully) happily snoring away again by now, having briefly woken up, given me a kiss, and sent me on my way. To be honest, I'm not even sure that she really woke up. Damn, I'm envious.
