Oct. 8th, 2008 12:03 pmTake a Playstation 3.
Give it some software that allows the user to create a persistent world that functions according to some basic physical principles.
Let them build whatever they want.
Watch them build a fully functional mechanical calculator.
Wait for it to switch to design mode, and pan up.
And be impressed.
Damn nerds!

You can tell I'm ill, I'm doing a meme
Oct. 8th, 2008 12:49 pmYour result for The Doctor Who Companion Test...
Captain Jack
You are Captain Jack - handsome, charming and always in the right place. The girls (and boys!) just can't seem to get enough of you. The Doctor can't get enough of you either, as you always seem to turn up just when the time is right. You've taken and dished a few beatings, stayed until the bitter end, and always manage to get out of trouble when it suits you. It's almost like you have a knack for being in the right place at the right time.
Still, you've made some stupid decisions in your time, and The Doctor isn't likely to let you forget them. In fact, despite your worldliness and age, you still can't seem to keep up with The Doctor as fast as some of his other companions. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be.

This fountain can actually make pictures and words with falling water. It's been described as working like an inkjet printer. Hundreds of nozzles create precise streams of water. Timed just right, images are created.

A free E-book. Will probably come in handy at some point.
-
I'll be needing this next week, I suspect, once our 3.5 campaign ends
-
Very impressive image search engine. Finds the image you give it, plus variants and cropped versions.
-
Fascinating concept. I wonder if it will catch on. It's not, by the way, even slightly the eBay model, unless they're thinking of eBay Express.

Figures published yesterday show deaths from cancer fell by 18.2 per cent in the decade to 2007 and are on course to hit the target reduction set by the Government four years ago of a 20 per cent fall by 2009-11.
Deaths from heart disease and stroke are down 44 per cent over the same period and have already exceeded the 40 per cent target set for 2009-11. -
Which takes you through it, top to bottom and back again, showing how everyone in the chain was, frankly, an idiot, who thought they could get away with it. If you've ever wondered how the credit crunch happened, this will explain it.
Bah (an illness update)
Oct. 8th, 2008 05:22 pmPart of me, this morning, thought "I'm feeling ill, but I'm not _that_ ill - by the afternoon I'll be happily playing Guitar Hero and writing long LJ entries."
No such luck.
I've not played any games at all, have read one comic, and have mostly managed to have inane IM conversations with people (cheers to
laserboy,
sneakingyoda and
is_not_well for the distractions).
It's now 5pm, and I'm feeling much the same - limp, fuzzy-headed, and unable to either concentrate for more than 2 minutes or stand up for more than 30 seconds without feeling horribly lightheaded.
Julie picked me up after work though, and has taken me over to her place, where she's made me tea, is going to make dinner, and generally look after me. Possibly this illness thing isn't so bad after all!
