Nov. 13th, 2002 07:19 pmWork update.
I'm now 10 days into my COBOL training. Today I had my first assessment - which was basically the same as one of the training work we've been doing, only we weren't allowed to confer. As I never need to ask other people questions anyway, there's not a problem there.
I scored 95%. Which put me in joint 3rd place, due to the fact that other people in the group are also very smart. Of course, I finished in 2 hours (hour and a half, really, but I went back and re-read everything three times to make sure I had it right) and everyone else took pretty much all three hours, so I feel good about that.
The things I got points knocked off for were all pretty simple - non-heirarchical procedures not named quite right, a loop variable updated in an odd place (not a wrong place, just not quite the place that's standard), a bit of optimisation that wasn't in the spec, no space between two items in the output (there wasn't a space specified in the spec, which is why I hadn't put it in, but as the trainer said, obviously there should have been one there, so I should have at least queried it), and a set of variables that were unnecessarily updated once per page despite the fact that they never changed.
The actual program worked perfectly, was commented to hell and back and was, in my opinion almost perfect (except for the variable updating thing, which stemmed from my misunderstanding of how COBOL variables are updated).
I promise to do better next time. 95% may be good enough for some people, but dammit, it's just not perfect :->
