The new network is going in this weekend. In preparation, we've replaced our Primary Domain Controller with a brand spanking new box (uber-fast, super-loud). It went in last night as a Backup Domain Controller and seemed to work fine.

This morning I come in and about a quarter of the machines in the network couldn't log on, citing "Cannot find Domain" which is less than useful. So we try this and that and the other and eventually we knock over the new server and 'ping' it all starts working.

Which is going to make working on the system today a tad tricky.

I suspect the problem is down to the abomination that is our network infrastructure (I still find it hard to believe that we're running two IP networks on the same network, with some machines having 2 IP addresses on the same card), which won't be sorted until 2 weeks from now...

Oh, the next 2 weeks are going to be fun. No time off for me.

AI

I went to see AI at the cinema. I didn't like it at all. Apart from the nonsensical story (and no, "it's a fairy tale" is not an excuse for not making sense) and technology only slightly more reasonable than Trek, I found it almost entirely unsatisfying emotionally.

So, when I was reading The Editing Room, It was great to come across this snippet at the end of the script that pretty much summed up how I felt:

DIRECTOR STEVEN SPIELBERG
Hooray! It turns out, in the end,
humanity isn't so bad after all if
given very specific and forced
circumstances! Love conquers all!
Tragedy becomes happiness in the
end!

DIRECTOR STEVEN SPIELBERG
Er.. uh.. well, you see, the robots
eventually rule the world and they
make his every wish come true. They
become more humane than the humans
were. Don't you see the great
irony?

AUDIENCE

DIRECTOR STEVEN SPIELBERG
Uh.. the teddy bear was cute
though, right?

AUDIENCE
I hate you. Please return to
directing your own god damn movies.
