Thanks for the second link - I've just emailed it, with my comments, to the rest of my Cloud Legal research team. As I noted:

"It's clear that this nice, simple service was just too simple - there was no authentication and the 'feature' of very short URL links actually meant that it was easy to guess valid URLs, or indeed to search for them methodically. The risk this incident highlights is that when Cloud application development tools (such as PaaS offerings) make it easy for any idiot to put together a Cloud service, sooner or later an idiot is going to do so, and the result will look professional enough that people will trust it with content that actually they would rather keep private."

Absolutely. Something I've bumped into with inexperienced developers (and was guilty of myself when I was less experienced) is the lack of awareness that designing these systems is complex and needs to be fully thought through. Simply chucking together a simple technological solution and throwing it at the internet is no longer good enough.

They seem to have thought that because it was good enough for TwitPic it was good enough for them. While not taking into account that Twitter is automatically public, so security doesn't matter and all the users know this.
