For example I doubt that many would argue that Aretha Franklin's Respect is not a great cover but its certainly not ironic.

Oh, absolutely. I don't think people are arguing that covers _have_ to be ironic. Most aren't. The modern mode where some people feel that every response has to be ironic can be both irritating and depressing.

I mean, I loved that version of Beat It. It's been stuck in my head for a week. But I'm sure some people will hate it with a fiery passion.
