I guess I ought to get around to watching The Hurt Locker.

At least it's been in cinemas where you are - release in NZ is April.

I never watch the Oscars, because half of the films are not shown in cinemas until months afterwards. It seems pointless trying to engage in a competition for films that you have not seen.

This year is no exception. Four of the the ten Best Picture films have yet to be shown in cinemas around here. The Hurt Locker is now being shown in some UK cinemas, but on a very limited release. The nearest place showing it is over 60 miles away (although I expect that will now change after it's triumph).

Oh, it's not been released yet? I assumed it had been released ages ago and I hadn't noticed :) OTOH, having read several people's comments on the oscars this year, it's the first time I've felt like I actually have known something about many of the films and been interested to know what happened, rather than not noticing at all.

the Hurt Locker was released in the UK in August last year and has been out on DVD for some time.

Only one of the shortlisted films - The Blind Side - hasn't been released in this country.

I doubt it since you can buy it on DVD for less than the price of a cinema ticket.

I noticed it has been released into some cinemas this week, but I had no idea you could buy it on DVD already. I guess that kills off my chances of watching it on the big screen.

I can wait until it's on the telly. From what I've heard, it's a action movie set in Iraq rather than a film that has anything desperately original to say about the war.

It's not an action film but no, it doesn't have anything to do with Iraq. That is simply where it is set.

It is pretty good and I would recommend watching it. A shame it will now carry such a weight of expectation though.

I lost all expectations the day Gump beat Shawshank.

Watched the first half last night. Really, really enjoyed it and it's clearly better than Avatar, but there have been dozens of better films in 2009

Out of the 10 Best Picture nominees, I'd recommend Up, District 9 and An Education above The Hurt Locker. The White Ribbon (up for Best Foreign Film) is a bit of a masterpiece too. The Cove (winner of Best Documentary) is harrowing but a brilliantly made documentary. On my personal list of things to see from the rest of the Oscar nominees: A Serious Man, A Single Man, Up In The Air, Bright Star and The Most Dangerous Man In America.

I didn't understand what this meant until after today now that it is all over the news.

Hurt Locker is a good watch, but it is nowhere near as good as what Avatar was.

(I should know.)
