I know that when Titanic was nearing the end of its production James Cameron offered to give back his share of the profits and directors fee in order to keep the studio happy.

Does anyone know if they accepted, and if he actually made any money off of it in the end?  I mean, I assume so - but I don't _know_.

According to various interviews, he received only his scriptwriting fee, having forfeited directing and producing fees in an effort to keep studio funding flowing. But these are only online interviews so how much truth is in the content I wouldn't like to say. If it's true, I'm sure he would his agent would have negotiated a share of the profits in lieu of fees, which must have totalled a tidy sum.

Of course Avatar is now being touted as the biggest grossing film ever, which I would dispute because ticket prices have increased a) due to inflation and b) because of the 3D premium prices. If some attempt is made to adjust for inflation, Titanic is only 7th on the alltime list and Avatar currently 21st (although it clearly hasn't finished yet).

Something which, to his credit (although I don't much like him), JC observed himself in an interview in Empire.
