This doesn't apply to websites where the advertising is the point of the site, such as eBay, Jobserve and Auto Trader. Those sites have a much broader funding base.

Firstly, I very much doubt that includes any form of Adwords.

Secondly, it is a little worrying that a generic blog article, which will have been churned out purely for SEO purposes is being reported as news.

Thirdly, it's bollocks.

I sincerely doubt that 2% of the readers of a typical print newspaper go out and buy one of the expensive cars that are always advertised in there.

Advertising offline isn't about immediate sales--when I ran my ad campaigns in the old job, I'd run ads for ages before the response rate came up to what I needed, ads are mostly about brand awareness and putting your name forward.

But somehow, online ads are only valuable if someone clicks to buy immediately. This is palpable bollocks, and this sort of churnalism is a good reason to stop buying newspapers. Oh, wait, I did that already.

... now all we need is some means of arranging that the remaining 98% of us don't even have to look at those adverts :-)
