They did explain the science behind it to a small extent, but mostly my thoughts were the same as yours!

This is very much like a BBC take off on Mythbusters. (In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Mythbusters hasn't done this already.)

It's an Airzooka: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KH3lqTNHtZM I got one to use in the theatre to throw actors off their lines, but it made a loud thumping sound when the diaphragm snaps back.
