I'm assuming that by "few" you mean "around three" as opposed to penguinsteph's family definition of "twenty".

"A few more" would vary depending on the original value.

"A few more pounds" than a million would probably be up to £1.3million, a few more pounds than £20 would probably be up to £25.

so in this context, I'd say up to 10. Maybe even 15.

Your last sentence doesn't seem to follow on since you jump from 25-30% to 200-300%. however, this is why I endorse you polls: plenty of wriggle room!

In this case, yes. I guess I was more looking for "I read nothing, I read the median amount, I read a fair bit, I read a lot" - which is going to be largely subjective.

The problem being that I can't remember how many books I have read in the last year. I _think_ it's between 15 and 30, but I don't think I could pin it down any further than that.

Hmm, so not everyone is an inveterate list maker like me?

I'm currently on my 38th books of 2009. Obviously this is vastly more than average but I get the feeling this puts me towards the low end for heavy readers.

Naaah, not this year. I only tend to have lists like that if I'm reviewing everything. I can tell you every movie I saw in 2003 because I reviewed them all. Otherwise I have other uses for my time :->

I'm on my 81st book for 2009, and there are plenty of readers on my flist who are already far higher than that. Even discounting the academics and literary critics who read 100s of books for the day job...

I kept a list last year and it was interesting in lots of ways. I read 87 books. I am not sure whether keeping the list distorted my reading.

I couldn't be bothered to keep the list going this year with all the stress of the book and everything. But I'm glad I did it one year.

I had trouble picking between time and money, but in the end surprised myself and went for "money". Perhaps that's because I have vacation coming up next week, and for once I will have some time...

Hair is greying, but at least it's in a dignified instead of "OMG yer old" manner. It's also not sloughing off into the sink. I'll keep it.

And I've been woefully low on reading these days, having spent far too much time staring at words on screens in the office seems to burn that out. Oddly, though, my DVD collection has grown to the point that it's about to overrun my storage capacity.

Can we get a definition on "few" versus "lot"?

I read "a lot" of books - I get through 1 a week or so, WAY down from my previous rate but still 50+ a year. I'd call that a lot compared to 5.

My wife goes through one every two days or so. Sometimes faster. She cheats by having bus time to read, but she reads MUCH more than I do.

I read 62 books last year and am currently halfway through my 28th of this year (Natural History by Justina Robson) which is not as many as some people I know, but is still way more than the average member of the population so I guess I'm doing ok. I like my hair the way it is - I need to get around to going to the hairdresser to have the split ends tidied up (in fact, I should probably have done so about a year ago), but apart from that I think it's ok.

How many full books I read last year is desperately small, definitely fewer than five. But I'm in grad school, so I pretty much only get to read something if I've either assigned or been assigned it, and I rarely read the whole thing even then.

Maybe someday I'll be able to read books again like a normal person. But I'm not holding my breath.

Heh. I think grad school permanently shaped (warped?) the way I read. The shelves in my office are full of partly read books - and I now pretty much refuse to buy anything that doesn't have a decent index in it.
