I've read three or four books. How do I register this fact?

[identity profile] stevegreen.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I was about to ask the same question. And do graphic novels count?

I've read some of the one book I haven't finished yet.

[identity profile] a-pawson.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
The average person has only read 5 books? Wow - there must be a lot of zeros because almost everyone I know must be well into 3 figures if not 4.

[identity profile] a-pawson.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, didnt realise it was only in the last year. That changes things somewhat.

[identity profile] natural20.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I had more money too. :) However time is by far the more scarce resource.

[identity profile] meihua.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming that by "few" you mean "around three" as opposed to [livejournal.com profile] penguinsteph's family definition of "twenty".

[identity profile] meihua.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
20 is a few more than 5? Great, you're another one. *grins*

Well, who knows then, I'm probably somewhere between the two. I'll stick.

[identity profile] ninebelow.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Your last sentence doesn't seem to follow on since you jump from 25-30% to 200-300%. however, this is why I endorse you polls: plenty of wriggle room!

[identity profile] ninebelow.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This is begging for a delicious books read poll with five book increments. Mmm, might do this later.

Current polls results: unsurprising.

[identity profile] ninebelow.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, so not everyone is an inveterate list maker like me?

I'm currently on my 38th books of 2009. Obviously this is vastly more than average but I get the feeling this puts me towards the low end for heavy readers.

[identity profile] helen-keeble.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm on my 81st book for 2009, and there are plenty of readers on my flist who are already far higher than that. Even discounting the academics and literary critics who read 100s of books for the day job...

[identity profile] communicator.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
I kept a list last year and it was interesting in lots of ways. I read 87 books. I am not sure whether keeping the list distorted my reading.

I couldn't be bothered to keep the list going this year with all the stress of the book and everything. But I'm glad I did it one year.

[identity profile] rhythmaning.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I had to guess too - I reckon it must be about 25-30, though. A few more than five, then...

[identity profile] star-tourmaline.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not happy with your hair. You need a haircut.

[identity profile] rhythmaning.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
You do know you're convincing me to grow my hair longer, don't you?

I don't need a haircut - you want me to have a haircut. Big difference!

[identity profile] channelpenguin.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
i wish my hair was not grey - cos there is no such thing as a perfect dye-job...

[identity profile] communicator.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
Embrace the silvery sheen of age :-) I feel much happier with my hair since I stopped dyeing it.

[identity profile] anton-p-nym.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I had trouble picking between time and money, but in the end surprised myself and went for "money". Perhaps that's because I have vacation coming up next week, and for once I will have some time...

Hair is greying, but at least it's in a dignified instead of "OMG yer old" manner. It's also not sloughing off into the sink. I'll keep it.

And I've been woefully low on reading these days, having spent far too much time staring at words on screens in the office seems to burn that out. Oddly, though, my DVD collection has grown to the point that it's about to overrun my storage capacity.

-- Steve's wondering if it's time to box up those old VHS cassettes. (Mind you, they still do get some use now and then.)

[identity profile] pisica.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
In general I like my hair, but I'm BORED because it's been basically the same style since FOREVER, unless you count 'extra frizz' as a different style.

Ooh! Ooh! I have an appropriate icon!

[identity profile] missedith01.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like more time and more money.

[identity profile] missedith01.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Plus, I'm only happy with my hair as it is because I don't have the time or the money to stay abreast of the latest fashions. If I had either more time or more money it'd probably lead to pilary discontent.

[identity profile] neferet.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I had more money... because it would let me straighten out a lot of things which would then mean I had more time.... :)

[identity profile] ishkhara.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, this!

[identity profile] theweaselking.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Can we get a definition on "few" versus "lot"?

I read "a lot" of books - I get through 1 a week or so, WAY down from my previous rate but still 50+ a year. I'd call that a lot compared to 5.

My wife goes through one every two days or so. Sometimes faster. She cheats by having bus time to read, but she reads MUCH more than I do.

[identity profile] makyo.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I read 62 books last year and am currently halfway through my 28th of this year (Natural History by Justina Robson) which is not as many as some people I know, but is still way more than the average member of the population so I guess I'm doing ok. I like my hair the way it is - I need to get around to going to the hairdresser to have the split ends tidied up (in fact, I should probably have done so about a year ago), but apart from that I think it's ok.

[identity profile] ladysisyphus.livejournal.com 2009-07-27 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
How many full books I read last year is desperately small, definitely fewer than five. But I'm in grad school, so I pretty much only get to read something if I've either assigned or been assigned it, and I rarely read the whole thing even then.

Maybe someday I'll be able to read books again like a normal person. But I'm not holding my breath.

[identity profile] beachpsalms.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. I think grad school permanently shaped (warped?) the way I read. The shelves in my office are full of partly read books - and I now pretty much refuse to buy anything that doesn't have a decent index in it.
