While I'm on that subject, can I just say that I have no objections to poring over thousands of lines of my code trying to make things work, but writing code that depends on systems that don't work themselves drives me completely mad.

Yup, that is annoying. Especially if it doesn't work right and is not documented (this will often explain why it doesn't work right - nobody knows how it is supposed to work!)
