Good article here that talks about Mad Men, the 1960s, and how much better nowadays is for women than it was (while obviously still needing just a smidgeon of improvement). Well worth a read.

Hmm.

If I was cleaning the carpet/floors with my hands, and a scrubbing brush and it was taking lot of time and was absolutely exhausting me, I would be happy to have a Hoover - although I'd rather have it not at Christmas.

Absolutely - buying hoovers is fine as a "handy thing for the house to make people's lives easier." just a bit crap as a christmas present.

My mom's favorite Christmas present from my father was a chainsaw. But then... that's my mom for you. And my dad.
