But there are some fantastic videogames which are console-based only! ;p

Hrrmph.

Accurate, not acurate, and I'd say the first one - buy a PC - should be "Buy a PC or a PS2 or PS3".

Yay, I'm getting a PS3! :-)

I already have several PCs and a PS2, and I'm thinking of getting a Wii one day just because the games look fun and the physical interaction is wonderful ... but I'll probably wait for a Wii 2 (I'm sure there will be an upgrade at some point, probably with a Blu-Ray player in it!)

You know it always amuses me (or possibly annoys, depending on mood) that this is always done as an 'either/or' thing. That people are either pc gamers or are console gamers.

Personally I do both! I've got a pc (which needs replacing before I stop being able to play any games on it) a PS2, PS3 and a Wii.

Wii vs BluRay

True, but BluRay players are already down to $350 in the US and £259 in the UK (doing a very quick search) and PC BluRay drives have just hit $200, or a combo BluRay/HD drive for the PC is $300.

Given the speed that DVD drives dropped in price and increased in performance, the drives should be around $100 by next Christmas, and as I don't expect a Wii 2 until Christmas 2009 at the earliest, plenty of time for the blu-ray drives to become commoditised.

It all depends on whether you see the goal as convergence (a la PS3 as your main movie player, PVR etc.) or whether you see the goal to be cheap separates, in which case the Blu-Ray drive would be an accessory (as the HD drive is for the XBox I believe). And everything will connect either via gigabit ethernet or some USB3/other fast digital connection (at least that's my dream, as it means the same external drive could be used by several devices on the network, just seeing it as a network drive ...)

The thing is, it isn't the number of exclusive games, it's which ones ... if *the* game you want is only on PS3, then you either buy a PS3 or don't play that game.

And it's not totally about price either ... otherwise why would people keep paying more money for better and better graphics cards for their PC in order to get more shading or more realism? People are willing to pay more for a better experience which the PS3 claims to give.

On the other hand, i'm not willing to pay that much!

Craig's brother Scott has had his 360 die on him twice so far and has given up on it and bought a PS3 instead. The 360 isn't the most reliable machine on the planet. :(

As Andy will concur you can't go wrong with a Wii. It's fun, friendly and addictive.

I however would probably buy a stand alone Blu-ray player. Nintendo have never converged their products, both XBox and PS2 had DVD functionality as standard yet as the last released of the 2nd Gen consoles Nintendo never bowed to the pressure to make it available on the GameCube.

I second Andy's comments on the PS3. There is nothing there that makes me want to spend money on an expensive piece of Blueray kit. I buy Consoles for games and frankly the PS3 is lacking in anything that makes me excited.

Last generation I felt exactly the same about the XBox - just full of Americocentric gaming. There was Halo 1+2, Fable and Ninja Gaiden. Everything else was just rehashed sports games, driving games and FPS which were better on the PC. Surprisingly they must have listened to my demographic because this generation I will probably buy an Xbox360 as soon as I hear that the latest versions don't suffer the Red Ring of Death inside 18 months.

PS2... yes. Still one of the best consoles to date, even now it outsells the PS3 in Japan.

Apparently the new Elite Xbox360 is much more reliable. I'm waiting to see actual figures for this, but initial impressions are they have started to iron out the RRoD issues.

It's like the PC/Mac argument. There are die-hards on both sides who will defend their machine of choice to the death, whilst derriding the other and refusing to acknowledge each has it's strengths and weaknesses.

Name 1 game on the PS3 worth buying at the moment? A single game that stands out on the shelves as a much buy console seller? ... No I can't either, and I'm not forking out £400 on "potential". People did that for the PSP and are probably pissed off they didn't grab a DS when they were writing it off as a gimick.

The PS3 is frankly a joke right now and no matter how Sony try and spin it, it has been a failure. They will have to do some SERIOUSLY good PR and start delivering titles unless they want to be where Nintendo were with the N64. (and they can start buy getting rid of the god awful 'this is living' advertising campaign)

There was a Gamecube DVD hybrid available in Japan and damned sexy it was too, but never made it this side of the market :(

Edit: Link: http://us.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx?pid=1001827247

I've always personally liked the fact Nintendo are only in this for the games. The Wii is at a price point where you can buy it alongside another console, which is probably why it is so popular. Also, let's face it, Blu Ray and HD DVD are years away from breaking into any sort of industry standard, so Nintendo have made a shrewd move by saving on production costs.

Sadly this is the case. I guess if I have to put myself in a camp, it is being in favour of 'playability', a factor that often seems to get overlooked these days in the pursuit of more realistic graphics, faster processing, best movie formats etc. Nintendo has a long history of delivering on this, but I'd still say the PS2 is one of my favourite consoles (never really liked the PS1, aside from a few select titles and the HUGE library of RPGs - that was the reason I bought one).

Absolutely, playability is the key. I remember the hours and hours of fun I had back in the 80's playing games on my old Sinclair Spectrum. 16 colours, 48k of RAM but an incredible amount of enjoyment.

That was never my point, so I don't feel I need to answer it. I said that if there was an exclusive game that was only on the PS3 you'd have to buy the console to play it. You point out that you don't know of any such game, and I nod and go "ok", I don't really care as I'm not going to be buying a PS3 *or* an XBox 360 as I'm not that much of a gamer and still have half a dozen PS2 games I've never even removed the plastic from ... plus a dance mat and EyeToy that haven't left their packaging either.

If it's down to sales, the Wii has won. nexgenwars.com reckon that the Xbox has outsold the PS3 2 to 1 (14million to 7million) but that the Wii has sold 16million already ... and obviously would have sold a lot more if there were any to buy this past Christmas! Of course the XBox 360 only sold about 7 million in its first year, so the PS3 is on about the same sames (maybe slightly behind) as it launched a year late(r)!

I've not seen the "this is living" campaign.

According to Wikipedia Microsoft are still losing money on the XBox 360 but hope to go into profit this year ... and have $1BILLION set aside for repairing bricked xBox360s (sounds like a reliable machine, not).

I'm not defending the PS3, it can live or die entirely on how well it does and I won't care. It's getting great press in the HiFi magazines as a good quality BluRay movie player though ... so maybe if Sony starts marketing it properly as something other than a games machine ...

... I skipped the PSP as well (I'd earlier skipped the Jaguar/Lynx/whatever as well from Atari) and have been impresed by how well the GameBoy and DS ranges have done, though I don't have one of those either. For a year I wanted a 5th Gen iPod so I could play the Tempest clone on it ... and I've had a 5th Gen iPod for a year now and still haven't bought the game! The only gaming I'm doing at the moment is on Facebook ... !

I'm amused by the heat and investment some people have in promoting one system and denigrating others ... it's fun to watch and occasionally try to find figures that confirm or contradict people's beliefs, but otherwise I'll wait and see if I win one or someone gives me one or a game arrives that I say "I *must* play *that*" and then I'll buy a system.

At the moment I'd probably buy a Wii, but I can wait (no floor space in the living room certainly helps me to wait!)

In theory a good plan, in practice they will never recouperate the losses made on the console if they don't shift games titles with it.

Is a fantastic game that did NOT stop the N64 from slumping Nintendo into the worst position they were ever in in the console market.

I happened to like the N64 a lot and it spawned a number of games that people hasven't played at their own loss. Excitebike 64 is probably one of the best race games I have ever played and frankly makes even MarioKart look average. Tetrisphere is a brilliant 2 player puzzler that is fast and furious and well worth a look in. You've already mentioned OOT, but did you play the Goemon's? As wacky as the Snes original but will keep you playing to the end, silly as it may be. Goldeneye was possibly the first of the genuinely playable console FPS, and then you have Smash Bros, Mario 64, Majoras Mask, FZeroX, ISS2000, Perfect Dark, Killer Instinct Gold...

So I'm not disparaging the N64, but as far as sales and market position goes, it was a failure. It didn't get the 3rd party support it needed, so despite the fact I can list off a good dozen great games, there were not the 300 or so middling games that a system needs to be successful. I'd be surprised if there were as many as 100 available over the course if it's lifespan.

The PS3 is rapidly losing all of its exclusivity contracts and titles due to low sales and complex programming tools. The comparisons have to be drawn, between the slump from Snes to N64 and the PS2 to PS3. That is all I am saying.

I've seen you play both.

Replaceing the keyboard with a butternut squash and the mouse with a six pack of koala's would only improve your playing ability.

Also, I had a big hearty man-laugh at the diagram. :)
