I remember one of the big systems group projects I heard about in grad school was supposed to be used for air traffic control - like, how to make sure that the whole system doesn't break and everyone stays on the same page if some machine hangs. I bet this would make a great testbed for that. In real life if you lose track of a 747 you can't just laugh it off.

I do wonder what proportion of the people involved in this are doing it purely for fun versus being prospective controllers, or pilots wanting to gain confidence in flight procedures and radio usage.
